A popular way of exploring Iceland is to base yourself in the capital and take day trips from Reykjavík to all the beautiful sights.
You’ll be able to enjoy everything from hiking, waterfalls, and glaciers, and still make it back to Reykjavík to sleep for the night.
I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about where to go on a day trip from Reykjavík, so here you go, my friends!
Your Iceland planning wish is my command! (My name is Jeannie, after all! 😉)
But instead of granting you 3 wishes, I’m giving you 10.
So, whether you decide to take a road trip or join a guided tour, get ready to take notes, because this top 10 list is packed with goodness!
Let’s get into it. 👇🏼
Table of Contents:
Best Day Trips From Reykjavík
Reykjavík is the perfect base for exploring some of Iceland’s most iconic spots and unique attractions.
Whether you’re in the mood for hiking to waterfalls, soaking in hot springs, or wandering through charming villages, you can experience this on a day trip.
Here are my favorite day trips out of the capital.
1. Day Trip from Reykjavík to Glymur Waterfall
Trip Time: 4.5 hours
I’m convinced that the perfect day includes a hike AND a waterfall – Glymur Waterfall has both!
To get to Glymur, you can take an underground tunnel or drive through Hvalfjörður – arguably one of the most beautiful fjords in Iceland.
I, of course, recommend taking the scenic route!
There are so many little gems along the way, like Meðalfellsvatn Lake and Steðji, so don’t forget to stop and explore!
When you arrive, you’ll hike for about two hours to get to the top, where you’ll be greeted by gorgeous scenery and Glymur Falls – the second-tallest waterfall in Iceland.
This is an awesome day trip from Reykjavík because it’s close – only 44 miles (71 km) away.
Need more convincing? Check out the blog post below and find out all about what to expect on your Glymur hike and more.👇

Of course, to fully enjoy your day trips from Reykjavík by car or to explore Iceland further on your own, you’ll need to rent a reliable vehicle.
One company that stands out above the rest is 👉 Blue Car Rental.
Their vehicles are perfect for handling Iceland’s terrain and unpredictable weather.
Plus, their customer service is excellent!
When you land at the airport, Blue Car has a shuttle service that can take you to its office next to the airport, making things so much easier.
And let’s face it: car rentals usually involve a ton of paperwork, but Blue Car makes it simple with their online check-in.
It saves you time, so you can grab your keys and hit the road without the hassle.

2. Reykjanes Peninsula
Trip Time: 5 hours
The Reykjanes Peninsula is one of the most overlooked areas of Iceland.
While this area doesn’t have gigantic waterfalls or hot springs, it’s beautiful, with incredibly unique landscapes.
You can expect rocky cliffs, adorable lighthouses, and geothermal hot pots, all packed into one little peninsula!
If you’ve never heard of it, it’s where you land at Keflavík International Airport.
This is an easy option, especially if you’re short on time and looking for something to add to your Iceland stopover itinerary.
I love taking day trips from Reykjavík to drive around this area, and it’s so beautiful in all seasons!
Some highlights to look out for are Krysuvík & Seltún, Reykjanestá and Reykjanesviti, Gunnuhver, Bridge Between Continents, and of course, a day trip from Reykjavík to the Blue Lagoon.
*Important note: With all the recent volcanic activity, it’s super important to keep informed about the Reykjanes Peninsula volcano and its eruptions.
Areas like the Blue Lagoon have been closed off in the past, so make sure you know what’s happening.
I keep an updated blog post on the eruptions here. 👉 Iceland volcano eruption (2024).
Take a look at some of the must-see places on the Reykjanes Peninsula below.👇
3. Iceland’s South Coast
Trip Time: 7 hours
The South Coast is such an iconic region of Iceland, that it’s nearly impossible not to add this to your itinerary!
With waterfalls, ocean views, and black sand beaches, this is the perfect day trip from Reykjavík.
I recommend taking a day trip to Vík, it’s totally doable in just one day!
If you’re thinking about driving to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, I suggest turning it into a two-day trip with an overnight stay.
You can read all about the South Coast and see why everyone raves about it right here!:👇

4. Reykjadalur Hot Spring (Thermal River)
Trip Time: 4 hours
If bathing in a hot spring in the middle of Icelandic nature sounds like a dream come true, add this to your list of day trips from Reykjavík!
Reykjadalur is a geothermal area located in Hveragerði, South Iceland.
You drive past this little gem on the way to all the sights on the South Coast, so you can’t miss it.
The hike to the hot spring will take you 2 hours round trip, and trust me, it’s worth every minute!

5. Golden Circle, Iceland
Trip Time: 5 hours with the basics, 8 hours with the hidden gems
Going to Iceland and skipping the Golden Circle is like visiting New York and not seeing Times Square!
It is conveniently close to Reykjavík and packed with some of Iceland’s most legendary sights – Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, and Gullfoss.
This route is easily drivable in one day, and definitely SHOULD NOT BE MISSED!
Be sure to explore hidden gems like Kerið – a volcanic crater surrounded by striking colors and filled with vibrant blue water.
Check it out in the video below.👇
6. Golden Circle (Extended)
Trip Time: 6 hours
The Golden Circle is not far from what I like to refer to as “The Golden Circle Extended” route.
This route takes you further inland than the traditional Golden Circle and is also one of the ways to get to Landmannalaugar.
A lot of people know about Háifoss (one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland and a personal favorite!), but just along the way are two more gorgeous places that can’t be missed: Gjáin and Hjalparfoss.
I call this amazing trio “Waterfall City.” And who doesn’t want to go to a city of waterfalls?
Heck, why not make it a complete waterfall-filled day with a visit to Þjófafoss on your way back?!

7. Snaefellsnes Peninsula (Snæfellsnes)
Trip Time: 8 hours
The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is another place that is close to Reykjavík and shouldn’t be missed!
This area has earned the nickname “mini-Iceland” because it has all of the beautiful landscapes of Iceland, packed into one small region.
It can be done in one day if you start early!
However…
I always recommend taking it slow and doing it over two days – there are just too many amazing things to see!
Pro Tip: be EXTRA careful in the winter around the end of the peninsula. I experienced some of the most dangerous road conditions there.
If you choose to tackle it in one day, you’ll need to move quicker and prioritize your stops, but it is doable.
If you need help deciding what you should see, this guide will help you out.👇

8. Reykjavík
Travel Time: 6 hours
Of course, this list would not be complete with a tour around Iceland’s beautiful capital city.
Reykjavík is the northernmost capital of the world and is filled with colorful houses, unique restaurants, and amazing views.
You could definitely spend a whole day walking around this city, and even longer if you enjoy visiting museums.
Pro Tip: Check out the Reykjavík walking tours!
There are also plenty of free activities to enjoy.
For all my fellow foodies out there, exploring a country’s cuisine is a must wherever you go and Reykjavík has excellent restaurants and a very robust nightlife.
My Reykjavík Food and Drink Guide will help you pick out what places you should keep in your back pocket from high-end to budget restaurants that don’t skimp on compromise on quality or flavor.
Reykjavík is known for being pricey, so be sure to check out my tips on how to stretch your budget and explore the many free things to do in the city.
Now, if you’ve decided to make Reykjavík your home base for exploring Iceland, here’s a little tip:
Book your stay early!
It’ll give you more flexibility and often better prices.
And to make the most of your time in the capital, don’t forget to grab your own 👉 Reykjavík Map.

9. Barnafoss and Hraunfossar Waterfalls
Travel Time: 5 hours
Hraunfossar and Barnafoss are two unique waterfalls in West Iceland.
The bright blue water contrasts beautifully against the black lava rock. It’s stunning!
This is such a fun area to walk around, with endless photo opportunities.
And because of their location, there aren’t a ton of tourists stopping in this area. This can easily be done as a day trip from Reykjavík.

10. Vestmannaeyjar (The Westman Islands)
Travel Time: 8 hours
One of my favorite places to visit in Iceland is the Westman Islands.
It’s an archipelago off the coast of South Iceland, so to get there, you need to take a ferry that departs near Seljalandsfoss.
The magical little town of Vestmannaeyjarbær is located on Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands.
It’s full of brightly colored houses – all on a volcanic island!
You’ll feel like you are in a fairytale land when you arrive.
This is a beautiful area to explore and you can do some hiking, get a quick lunch, or just walk around the town.
If you’re grabbing a bite to eat, try Slippurinn restaurant. We’ve dined there before and it was fantastic!
I also recommend the hike to the top of Mt. Heimaklettur – the highest peak on the island.
Vestmannaeyjar would be an amazing day trip from Reykjavík in itself or a great addition to any South Coast trip.
Pro Tip: Make sure to check the ferry schedules before you plan your trip!
