Iceland is home to some truly amazing places, and while the popular spots attract plenty of visitors, there are still many quieter, less-explored areas waiting for you. These Iceland hidden gems may take a little extra effort to get to, but trust me, they’re 100% worth it!

Between the glaciers, volcanoes, black sand beaches, and northern lights, it’s no wonder millions of tourists flock to Iceland each year.
Yet, when most people plan their itinerary, they stick to the most popular spots—like Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and South Iceland – before heading home.
Don’t get me wrong, these places are incredible, but depending on when you go, they can get pretty crowded.
So, if you’re wondering if there are still quieter, untouched parts of Iceland left to explore…
The answer is absolutely yes!

10 Hidden Gems of Iceland
Tourism in Iceland has boomed over the years, with around 2.5 million tourists visiting every year. And that number is only expected to increase.
I can’t say I’m surprised, but that’s a lot of people in a little country of only 395,000 people!
For me, the best part of exploring Iceland is finding those hidden spots away from the crowds.
Here are my top 10 spots to add to your itinerary!
1. Iceland Eastfjords
If you’re looking for a slow-paced getaway with almost no tourists, then you need to head to the Eastfjords.
The Ring Road actually cuts off these fjords, so not many people even think to take a detour and explore this Iceland hidden gem.
Yes, it takes more time to visit this area, but trust me, it’s totally worth it! This isn’t a place you want to rush through.
Take your time, travel through the fjords, and stop at the charming little towns along the way.
It’s incredibly beautiful!

2. The Highlands
The Highlands have hands down some of the most amazing scenery in all of Iceland!
Places like Þórsmörk (Thórsmörk) feature gorgeous, lush green mountains, and the Thórsmörk Valley extends between not one, not two, but three glaciers!
This region is perfect for the more adventurous traveler looking for Iceland hidden gems.
However, accessing the Highlands requires careful planning.
The area is reached via F-Roads—rugged mountain roads known for their challenging terrain. These roads are only open between June and September and require a 4×4 vehicle designed for off-road driving. If you plan to explore this area, make sure you’re prepared for the conditions.
Once you’re there, though, the hiking in the Highlands is next-level.
Places like Landmannalaugar attract avid hikers and can get crowded during peak season.
However, you can find numerous hiking trails that are less crowded, like the Snækollur hike at Kerlingarfjöll.
There’s just something magical about exploring Iceland’s quieter, hidden gems.

3. South Iceland Gems: Westman Islands / Vestmannaeyjar
Finding hidden gems in South Iceland can be tricky because it’s so popular, but I’ve got two up my sleeve just for you!
If you’re visiting the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall, the Herjólfur ferry at Landeyjahöfn terminal is only 15 minutes away.
Just hop on the ferry and head over to the Westman Islands!
From Reykjavík, it’s a 2-hour drive to the terminal.
Once you’re there, you can hike on a volcanic eruption site, wander around charming brightly colored houses, and treat yourself to some seriously delicious food.
The Westman Islands are ideal for a day trip, but if time allows, stick around for a couple of days to really soak it all in.

4. Þjófafoss (Thjofafoss Waterfall) in South Iceland
The second Iceland hidden gem in South Iceland is Thjofafoss Waterfall (Þjófafoss).
A stunning turquoise waterfall surrounded by a lava field and framed with a mountain in the background…
I mean, come on Iceland, now you’re just showing off! 😉
I first spotted it on Pinterest and had to track it down, even though it wasn’t the easiest to find!
What can I say? I’m stubborn!
The drive was a bit of a challenge, but if you’re near the Golden Circle or South Iceland, it’s definitely worth the detour. Just make sure you have a 4×4 vehicle – the final stretch of road is pretty rough.

5. Tröllaskagi Peninsula
Next on the list is the Tröllaskagi Peninsula, and let me tell you – it’s crazy beautiful!
We’re talking towering mountains, breathtaking fjords, and the cutest little fishing villages you’ve ever seen.
This Iceland hidden gem often gets overlooked by tourists because the Ring Road cuts it off.
But all it takes is a two-hour detour around the peninsula, and I promise, you won’t regret making the trip!

One of my personal favorite Iceland hidden gems is the Westfjords.
While this area starting to become more popular, very few tourists actually make it out there.
That means you still have a great chance of experiencing this magical spot almost all to yourself
A road trip through the Westfjords will take you to some of the most remote and stunning spots in all of Iceland.
Think incredible fjord views, majestic mountains, charming little towns, and one of my favorite waterfalls in the entire country – Dynjandi.

7. Iceland Hidden Gems in Reykjavík
If you thought there couldn’t possibly be any secret things to do in Reykjavík, my friend, you’d be mistaken!
Iceland’s capital might be known for its iconic landmarks, but if you’re looking for something a little different, check out these lesser-known spots around the city.
Elliðaárdalur: Elliðaárdalur Valley is one of those Iceland secret spots that many tourists overlook in Reykjavík.
It’s the perfect place for a peaceful picnic, just a 10-minute drive from the city center. You can wander along walking paths and really soak in the natural beauty.
Bíó Paradís: This artistic cinema, showcases and international films, alongside special screenings of timeless classics and cult favorites. Their café serves beer on tap and they have an impressive collection of posters!
Höfði Lighthouse: If you want to take some impressive photos, this adorable bright yellow lighthouse looks like it’s straight out of a Wes Anderson movie!
From picnics in hidden valleys to Instagrammable moments at the lighthouse, Reykjavík is an incredible city to explore.

8. Seltún
This geothermal area on the Reykjanes Peninsula, located in Krýsuvík.
It’s full of bubbling mud pits in shades of blue, green, orange, and yellow, with steaming vents adding to the unique atmosphere.
This Iceland hidden gem doesn’t see as many visitors as it should!
Pathways allow you to walk right through and get a close-up view of the bubbling mud pits.

9. Iceland Hidden Gems Along the Golden Circle
A lot of travelers will opt to visit the Golden Circle. While popular sites are well-marked, there are also hidden spots in Iceland along this iconic route.
Þórufoss: Chances are, you’ll drive right past this unless you know to look for it! It’s just a short turn off the main route. So, if you’ve always wanted to visit one of the many filming locations of Game of Thrones, this is one of them!
Friðheimar: One of the best lunch spots you will ever find! It’s a greenhouse-turned-restaurant, and the specialty is tomato soup. But if that’s not your thing, they also offer salads, tortillas, seafood, and pasta, on their menu.
Plus, you’ll be surrounded by tomato plants as you dine – such a unique experience!
While you’re there, you can visit the stables to see Icelandic horses or unwind at the wine bar and bistro.
Laugarvatn Fontana: This geothermal spa is a fantastic Blue Lagoon Alternative. It’s cheaper and less crowded, making it a perfect spot to relax during your trip. Another really cool feature is the onsite geothermal bakery, where they actually bake bread using earth’s heat! The bread is buried in the ground and left to bake for 24 hours, and you’ll even have a chance to taste it! Check out the tour here.👇

Two of the best hidden gems in West Iceland have to be Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls!
They’re absolute must-visits and only 90 minutes from Reykjavík.
Picture turquoise streams flowing over mossy lava rock.
The hike to see both is quick and easy, making it a perfect day trip.
And the best part? You can visit them year-round!
