Visit Gullfoss Waterfall: A Step-by-Step Guide to the Jewel of the Golden Circle

Landscape View of Gullfoss Waterfall in Iceland | Iceland with a View

What if I told you that in a single day trip, you could stand in front of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, then head off to glaciers, ice caves, hot springs, and craters nearby?

That’s the magic of visiting Gullfoss Waterfall, often called the crown jewel of the Golden Circle.

It’s just two hours from Reykjavík, and it opens the door to some unforgettable experiences!

Gullfoss is a two-tiered waterfall, and what’s fascinating is that when you look at it from above, it looks like the water just vanishes into a narrow crack in the earth.

And you don’t even need to hike for hours to see it!

There are easy paths for a quick view, or longer trails if you want to explore every angle.

In this guide, I’ll show you what makes Gullfoss so special, the best things to do nearby, and exactly how to plan your visit.

Let’s get into it!

Interesting Facts About Gullfoss, Iceland

This beautiful waterfall has a couple of fun facts about it:

Gullfoss meaning: The name “Golden Waterfall” comes from the way the water in the Hvítá River can glow a golden-brown color in certain light, which is exactly how Gullfoss got its name.

Two-tiered waterfall: Gullfoss isn’t just one cascade, but two. The first drop falls 36 feet (11 m), followed by a much bigger 69-foot (21 m) plunge into the narrow canyon below. And just when you think it can’t get any better, on sunny days you might even catch a rainbow!

Protecting Gullfoss: Another interesting fact about Gullfoss Waterfall is that in the early 1900’s there were plans to turn it into a hydroelectric plant.

The owner’s daughter, Sigríður Tómasdóttir, fought to stop it. Because of her determination, the hydroelectric plant was never built, and Gullfoss was preserved.

She is now remembered as Iceland’s first environmentalist, and when you visit the waterfall, you’ll see a memorial stone nearby in her honor.

Gullfoss Nature Reserve: A few decades ago, the waterfall was declared a nature reserve to protect the waterfall and the canyon below for future generations.

Gullfoss Waterfall Location

Picture of Jeannie in the Walking Trail of the Gullfoss Waterfall | Iceland with a View

Could the location be any more perfect?… I think not!

When you’re traveling the Golden Circle route, the three major stops are Þingvellir, Geysir, and then the grand finale is Gullfoss in the Haukadalur geothermal valley.

It’s close to some must-see sites! (We’ll get to those in a bit…)

Gullfoss is on the Hvítá river in South Iceland and is fed by Langjökull, Iceland´s second-largest glacier.

Distance from Reykjavík to Gullfoss Waterfall: It’s roughly 78 miles (125 km), or just under two hours by car, making it such a perfect day trip from Reykjavík!

If you’re plugging it into your GPS, the Gullfoss address you’ll want is: Gullfoss Falls 846 Iceland.

Because it’s an easy drive from Reykjavík and part of a loop, most travelers pair Gullfoss with other Golden Circle stops in one day.

The easiest way to do that is by renting your own car. It’s by far the best way to explore at your own pace.

I recommend Blue Car Rental. They’re a local company, so they understand Iceland’s unique roads and weather conditions.

Insurance is included, and their online check-in means no waiting around so that you can get on the road faster.

Gullfoss Waterfall Lookout + Gullfoss Parking, Iceland

There are two parking areas at Gullfoss: The upper lot is near the visitor center, and the lower one is closer to the waterfall.

Most photos of Gullfoss Waterfall are taken from the west side, but you can also reach the waterfall from the east.

To get there:

  • Turn left onto Road 30, cross the bridge, then take another left onto the gravel Road 349.
  • Follow this road for a few miles until you see a Gullfoss sign marking the parking area.
  • From there, a short path leads to the waterfall.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring rain gear. There are no safety railings on this side, so you have to be super careful!

Upper parking area: This is the most popular lot with a paved path to multiple viewing locations. I suggest this one if you’re traveling Iceland with kids (this path is easier for little legs to navigate) or just want a quick stop.

Lower parking area: From here, you can walk up to the upper lot or down closer to the river. Keep in mind that in winter, the lower path might be closed.

Even with a 2WD rental, you should have no trouble reaching both parking areas.

Bonus: Parking at Gullfoss is free!

Gullfoss Waterfall in Winter

Landscape View of Gullfoss Waterfall Covered in Snow in Iceland | Iceland with a View

This waterfall is accessible year-round and let me tell you, it’s spectacular in winter with Gullfoss’ frozen surroundings!

That said, you may notice that some walkways are closed at certain times of the year. This is for your safety, so please don’t ignore those barriers!

The paths can get extremely slippery from ice and snow, so crampons are non-negotiable.

And if you’re wondering what else to pack, you’re not alone. Packing for winter and shoulder seasons can feel overwhelming, especially when luggage space is limited.

That’s why I created the 👉 Ultimate Iceland Packing Guide for you.

It comes with a layering cheat sheet, monthly weather averages, packing lists, and gear that I personally recommend.

The Visitor Center

The visitor center is right by the upper parking lot. You’ll be able to get all the information you need about the trails here, including whether any paths have been closed off.  It’s also a handy spot for restrooms, a quick coffee break, and browsing the gift shop for souvenirs.

Gullfoss Opening Hours: The viewing points are open 24/7, but if you’re planning on visiting the gift shop and restaurant, they’re open Monday – Friday 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM and Saturday – Sunday 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM.

*These can change depending on the season, so always double-check the operating hours for the day of your visit.

The Gullfoss Cafe

Depending on how long you plan to stay, you can opt for something quick like a sandwich or a sit-down meal at the Gullfoss Panorama Restaurant.

Besides coffee and other hot drinks, the Gullfoss restaurant offers a full menu including soups, salads, burgers, pizzas, grilled salmon, and traditional Icelandic lamb dishes!

The Gift Shop

The Gullfoss store has everything from fridge magnets and toy puffins to lava stone jewelry! It’s a great spot to pick up a gift or a little keepsake to remember your visit.

Gullfoss Waterfall Hike

Most visitors stick to the short, 3-minute walk from the parking lot to the main viewing platform. It’s instant gratification, because the views are right there and stunning!

If you’re up for a bit more exploring, there are trails that take you to both the upper and lower falls.

Altogether, the trails stretch about 2.1 miles (3.4 km) and loop past several viewpoints, giving you different perspectives of the waterfall.

You can walk the full route in around 30 minutes, which is plenty of time to soak it all in.

Gullfoss Hotels + Accommodation

While the Golden Circle can be done as a daytrip, you can certainly extend your stay and really take your time exploring the area.

Here are a few hotels near Gullfoss Waterfall.

Hotel Gullfoss, Brattholt: Located in the Selfoss district, this hotel is only 5 minutes from the falls. The Hotel Gullfoss restaurant serves dishes like lamb and Icelandic salmon, but it’s the lava cake that really caught my eye!

When booking accommodation in Iceland, I always recommend choosing a place that includes breakfast. And at Hotel Gullfoss, a complimentary breakfast is served daily.

Oh, this is also an excellent spot to view the Northern Lights!

Hotel Geysir: This family-run hotel in the Haukadalur valley stands out against the landscape with its modern architecture. Large windows reflect the surroundings, while wood finishes bring in a warmth with natural elements.

The hotel has an on-site restaurant where ingredients are fresh and sourced from local farmers, so you know the meal’s gonna be good!

Héradsskólinn Historic Guesthouse: This guesthouse is beyond charming! I absolutely love the design. It was created by Guðjón Samúelsson, one of Iceland’s greatest architects, who also designed Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík.

The on-site restaurant serves delicious meals ranging from pizza to meat and fish, all while you enjoy views of the lake.

You can choose between dorms, private rooms, and family rooms; it’s the perfect spot whether you’re traveling solo in Iceland, as a couple, or with the whole family.

Gullfoss camping: Skjól Camping Ground is ideally located between Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir. It has a restaurant and bar, plenty of activities for kids, including a big jumping pillow and nearby hiking trails.

If you’re after a more comfortable camping experience, I highly recommend going the camper van route.

Landscape View of Geysir in Iceland | Iceland with a View

If you’re already hitting one of the major stops on the Golden Circle, it makes sense to visit the other two: Geysir and Þingvellir National Park.

Different Golden Circle tours will usually throw in a few other stops along the way to add to the adventure.

There are a ton of activities you can do here as well including horseback riding, visiting hot springs, and if you’re feeling extra daring, snorkeling the Silfra. (When I tried it I was terrified, certain it would be my last day on this earth! But it turned out to be one of the coolest, most surreal experiences I’ve ever had.)

What’s really great is that you can do this route in a day and see some really interesting spots on the way.

It’s a natural hot spring pool, with beautiful scenery that’s open year-round, so don’t forget to bring your swimsuit…even if it’s winter!

Kerid Crater is Iceland’s most well-known crater and lucky for you, it’s only about 45 minutes drive away from Gullfoss Waterfall!

Can I just take a minute and gush about the colors?!

Striking red volcanic rock against the green moss, and the turquoise-blue water of the crater… SO pretty!

What’s nice is that you don’t need a lot of time to explore it. An hour is enough time to walk around, take photos, and enjoy the scenery.
