Picture of the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Waterfalls in the Winter | Iceland with a View

Do you know what I absolutely love about traveling in Iceland? It’s finding those hidden gems off the beaten path that most people miss, and Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls are perfect examples of that!

Don’t get me wrong, places like Geysir and Skógafoss are definitely worth seeing, but there’s something special about standing alone in the heart of Icelandic nature, with no crowds in sight.

Not to mention, this is a 2-for-1 waterfall stop just 90 minutes from Reykjavík!

Who could say no to that?

If you’re heading to Snæfellsnes or just short on time, you NEED to stop here!

Are you ready to see what makes these waterfalls so special?

Let’s get into it!

Best Time of Year to Visit Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Waterfalls

I’d had my eye on these beautiful waterfalls for a while, so when I finally saw them in person, I was thrilled!

My first road trip to Barnafoss and Hraunfossar was on a cold January morning.

And you guessed it – I was the ONLY PERSON out there (a perk of visiting Iceland in winter!)

Even though there was snow everywhere and only four hours of daylight, it didn’t stop me from discovering new waterfalls in Iceland.

Since you don’t need a whole lot of time, it’s totally possible to visit in the winter when you don’t have that many daylight hours.

If you’re looking to capture those spectacular waterfall photographs, Hraunfossar winter landscapes won’t disappoint!

While summer’s milder weather makes it an excellent time to visit, my winter trip was gorgeous.

Honestly, these waterfalls deserve a spot on your itinerary year-round.

Pro Tip: It can get snowy and slippery in the winter, so be sure to pack the right gear!

If you’re feeling inspired to plan your own trip but aren’t sure what to pack, I’ve got the perfect resource to get you started—and it won’t cost you a dime!

With my Ultimate Iceland Packing Guide you’ll get packing tips and checklists of what to pack for all the seasons, what luggage, documents, and electronics to bring plus my shopping recommendations (even for kids) for each season.Start planning your trip on the right foot and download the FREE guide below. 👇

Directions from Reykjavík to Barnafoss and Hraunfossar Waterfalls

These waterfalls are just a 90–minute drive from the capital, making them the perfect day trip from Reykjavík

These waterfalls are located near Borgarfjordur (Borgarfjörður), a fjord in West Iceland along the Hvítá River.

It’s about a 43-minute drive from Borgarnes.

If you’re traveling from downtown Reykjavík to Hraunfossar, start by taking Route 1 North.

You’ll pass through several roundabouts and small towns along the way.

After about 25 km, you’ll reach the Hvalfjörður tunnel (which has been free since October 2018).

Once through the tunnel, take a sharp right to stay on Route 1 heading toward Borgarnes.

After approximately 6 miles (10 km), the road will split with Route 47, but stick to Route 1 – plenty of signs will guide you.

Before crossing the bridge into Borgarnes, turn right onto Route 50 and continue for 30km.

Then, follow Route 518 toward Reykholt for another 20km.

You’ll see the sign for Hraunfossar on the left side of the road.

Don’t miss the chance to stop here if you’re conquering the iconic Ring Road.

Hraunfossar and Barnafoss make for a fantastic detour!

If you want to take your trip to the next level, check out my 7-Day Iceland Ring Road Itinerary.

It includes detailed maps, where to go to avoid the crowds, and a digital map for easy navigation on the go.

With this itinerary, you’ll have all the essential stops marked out and get special discounts to save on your trip.

Hraunfossar Parking and Restrooms

If you’re visiting during the busy summer season, you’ll be glad to know that it rarely feels crowded here. This allows you to take your time and enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed!

Parking: There’s plenty of free parking, so no worries about finding a spot.

Restrooms: There are restrooms available, but there is a fee to use them.

Hraunfossar Restaurant

Right by the parking lot and visitor’s center, you’ll find Hraunfossar Café.

Their meals are made from local ingredients, and you can indulge in coffee, cake, and ice cream for a sweet treat.

(Don’t get me started on Icelandic ice cream – you NEED to try it!)

This is also a good spot to pick up a few souvenirs to remember your trip.

Pro tip: The Hraunfossar cafe is only open during the summer months.

Hraunfossar Waterfall Hike to Barnafoss

Trail difficulty: The walking path around the waterfalls is well-marked and easy to navigate. The 0.5 mile loop trail to Barnafoss is considered easy and suitable for all ages.

Hraunfossar hike time: 14 minutes

When you step out of your car, you’ll immediately hear the rushing water of the falls.

Walk straight ahead to a viewing platform – it only takes a few minutes before you catch your first glimpse of the stunning Hraunfossar Falls (which translates to “Lava Waterfalls”).

When I first saw Hraunfossar, it was everything I had imagined, but BETTER.

You guys, this is the ultimate waterfall: a long wall of water cascading over moss-covered lava, pouring into bright turquoise water!

Am I in heaven?

The water falls into the Hvitá River – downstream from Gullfoss waterfall.

The river’s vibrant water winds through sharp lava walls, and on a clear day, you can spot Langjökull glacier in the background.

Barnafoss Waterfall

After taking plenty of photos of Hraunfossar, head right to start your walk towards Barnafoss falls.

The path is easy and clearly marked.

You’ll soon come to a bridge crossing over the river.

Psst.. Remember to enjoy the scenery along the way!

You’ll see many colors on the rocks – I seriously need a geologist friend to explain all of this to me!

After you cross the bridge, you’ll see Barnafoss on your left.

Barnafoss means “Children’s Waterfall,” and has a haunting Icelandic legend tied to it:

A woman and her two children lived on a nearby farm. One day, the woman went to church, leaving the children at home.

When she came back, they were missing.

People searched for the children and found footsteps leading up to the stone arch over the river.

Devastated by her loss, the mother had the stone arch destroyed so no children could cross the falls again.

Pro Tip:  Always obey signs and roped-off areas. The water is fast-moving and extremely cold. (You don’t want to end up like the children in the legend!)

This impressive volcanic crater is the largest of three in the area, standing at 170 meters (550 feet) tall and covered in lush moss.

The views of the surrounding mountains are gorgeous, but know that it can get quite windy here.

Glanni Paradise is a lovely spot for walking, featuring a small waterfall and a waterhole. However, access can be tricky in winter.

What to Pack for a Successful Waterfall Hike

Picture of Jeannie's Few Essentials when Packing for a Hiking Trip in Iceland | Iceland with a View

Iceland is famous for its incredible hiking trails.

However, if you want to get the most out of your hike, don’t forget to pack the essentials.

Crampons: A must if you’re visiting the falls between November and March. Whenever there’s snow and water, it’s bound to get slippery, and you can get seriously hurt if you slip and fall on the ice! These spikes are perfect for hiking and provide extra protection.

Camera + tripod: Waterfalls = amazing photo opportunities. Read more on how to capture the best pics when you’re here.👇

Snacks: I don’t know about you, but hiking really makes me work up an appetite. Be sure to pack a few snacks so you don’t end up getting hangry!

Water bottle: Bring a refillable water bottle that you can fill up. Seriously, don’t buy water in Iceland! Most of the time you can just fill up at the nearest stream during your hike (so good!). Plus, the tap water here is good to drink too.

Hiking boots: Don’t overlook getting quality hiking boots. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking here, so make sure your shoes are comfortable and durable. I personally like boots that offer extra ankle support.

Warm layers: When you’re visiting Iceland, you need to layer up my friends! One of the best items I ever bought was my genuine Icelandic Lopapeysa. It’s ahmazing! And seriously, it’s the warmest sweater I own.

Outerwear for all seasons: Your outerwear in Iceland needs to be weatherproof. That cute little Michael Kors coat is not gonna cut it here! Make sure your outerwear keeps you warm and dry.

Accessories: Don’t forget your hat, gloves, gator and sunglasses. Even if the weather starts out a certain way that day, know that it can change, quickly!

Expect that if you’re visiting a waterfall, especially if you’re getting close, there is going to be spray from the falls and you’re going to get wet!

You’re bound to encounter rain on your trip to Iceland.

That should not stop you from exploring! Check out the post below for the rain gear you need to pack for your trip. 👇
