Oh the adorable city of Reykjavik!
Reykjavik is the northernmost capital of the world and if you’re planning a trip to Iceland, chances are you’ll be spending at least a day here. Between the colorful wooden buildings, lively art scene` and a growing foodie culture, Reykjavik is full of gems. There’s something for everyone in this beautiful city. Today we’re talking about ten places around Reykjavik to get the best Instagram photos. Let’s get into it.
Maybe the most iconic part of Reykjavik is the stunning church of Hallgrimskirkja. The columns around the church are actually inspired by Svartifoss and I highly recommend making a visit to this beautiful church. If you want the best view over the city, I suggest going up to the top for great photos over Reykjavik.
The Harpa is a beautiful glass building sitting right along the ocean in Reykjavik. This is where a lot of concerts and plays are held, but you can walk around in Harpa at no charge.
Sólfarið means the Sun Voyager in Icelandic and this is a sculpture that’s actually a tribute to the sun and it represents discovering uncharted territory.
Laugavegur is the main shopping street in Reykjavik. Here you’ll find a lot of restaurants and shopping, street art and a lot of travelers.
Next up, I suggest just walking the streets. So Reykjavik is a small city and easily walkable. Just take a couple of hours walking around the city and check out all of the adorable, colorful houses. One of the most picturesque street is called Njarðargata.
Next up, keep your eye out for all of the great street art in Iceland. So Iceland is actually known for embracing its creative and artistic culture, and you can find street art around every little corner in Reykjavik. There’s endless displays of colorful street art and more popping up all the time!
Tjörnin is a pond that’s in the heart of Reykjavik and around the pond you’ll find beautiful Icelandic architecture. This is a really popular place to take your kids and feed the ducks.
Now make sure to stop by the Old Harbor. There’s a lot of old buildings and old fishing vessels that sit right along the sea.
Perlan is another building that’s just outside of Reykjavik, so this is actually a building that holds geothermal water, but what it’s most known for is inside you’ll find exhibits talking about geology and the nature in Iceland and there’s also an amazing ice cave tunnel. Now, don’t forget to head to the top of the viewing platform where you can get the best views over Reykjavik.
Last up is the Grotta lighthouse. So this is just a short drive from central Reykjavik. You can drive over here or you can walk from the city. I recommend heading out to this area to catch the Northern Lights because usually it’s one of the darkest places of the city.
