What is the Golden Circle in Iceland?
Sometimes called the Golden Road or Golden Ring, Icelandās famous loop includes three major areas: Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir, a geothermal area and Ćingvellir National Park.
These stunning attractions are the main highlights, but youāll also find plenty of hidden gems along the way.
Is the Golden Circle Worth It?

Best Time of Year to Visit
As I mentioned above, the Golden Circle, Iceland, is accessible year-round, but June to August is peak tourist season, so you can expect a lot of crowds.
Because itās such a popular route, the roads are well maintained and snow is regularly cleared.
However, this is Iceland, and driving in winter weather can be challenging, no matter where you are!
Experiencing the Golden Circle in winter is very different compared to summer, but both promise to be an unforgettable experience.
Driving the Golden Circle, Iceland
So, how long does it take to drive the Golden Circle?
It should take you roughly 5 hours to stop at the major attractions, or up to 8 hours if you plan on including the hidden gems.
While you could take a Golden Circle day trip from ReykjavĆk, and squish it all into a day, I highly recommend renting a car and taking a few days to really soak it all in.

Distance from ReykjavĆk to Golden Circle, Iceland
The drive time depends on your stops, but the first major site, Ćingvellir National Park, is only about a 40-minute drive from ReykjavĆk.
From ReykjavĆk to Geysir, youāre looking at roughly a 1 hour and 40-minute drive, and to Gullfoss waterfall, it’s just under 2 hours.

The Golden Circle Route + Major Sites
The full Golden Circle loop stretches about 140 miles (230 km), but donāt let the distance fool you – thereās so much packed into this route that you could spend an entire day (or more) exploring.
One moment, youāre standing between tectonic plates, and the next, youāre watching a geyser erupt or walking up to a roaring waterfall.
The main Golden Circle stops are Ćingvellir National Park, Geysir, and Gullfoss waterfall.

Thingvellir National Park (Ćingvellir)
Thingvellir National Park is the first major stop on the Golden Circle, and for good reason.
Not only is it one of the most historically significant places in Iceland, but itās also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This is where Icelandās first parliament was established over a thousand years ago, making it the birthplace of the nationās democracy.
But history isnāt the only thing that makes Thingvellir special ā itās also where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, creating a dramatic landscape of cracks and cliffs.
The park is packed with SO many incredible things to do. Whether youāre into hiking, horseback riding, or capturing stunning photos, thereās something for everyone here.
And if youāre up for a truly unforgettable experience, snorkeling in the Silfra fissure is a must! This is the only place in the world where you can swim between two continents in some of the clearest water on Earth. Thingvellir is one of the most visited places in Iceland, and itās easy to see why.

Geysir
This geothermal area in the Haukadalur geothermal valley is about 65 miles (106 km) from ReykjavĆk. As the second major stop on the Golden Circle route, itās roughly a 40-minute drive from Ćingvellir.
This area is famous for its hot springs and geysers and Strokkur Geyser is a main attraction.
Eruptions happen every few minutes and towers of water shoot out of the ground, some reaching heights of 65 feet (20 meters)! Other geysers in the area include Great Geysir, SmiĆ°ur, Litli, and Blesi.
Youāll also find bubbling mud pots and steaming vents scattered throughout the area, itās pretty cool to see up close!
Gullfoss
Did you know that the name Golden Circle is derived from this famous waterfall in the route because Gullfoss means āGolden Fallsā?
Gullfoss is a powerful, two-tiered waterfall that crashes into a deep canyon. The first drop is more gentle, while the second plunges into the misty gorge below.
There are walking paths and viewing platforms of the waterfall, where you can get some pretty incredible views!
Nearby activities include snowmobiling on Langjƶkull Glacier, horseback riding, or soaking in the Secret Lagoon.

BrĆŗarfoss Waterfall
BrĆŗarfoss is one of those hidden gems that shouldnāt be missed!
With its incredible electric blue water, itās easily one of the most stunning waterfalls in Iceland.
Located between Laugarvatn and Geysir, the hike there is about 7 km round-trip, and you’ll get to pass by a couple of smaller waterfalls on your way, which is so cool.
Itās definitely one of the places that took my breath away!

Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Hot Springs
If youāve wanted to visit a geothermal spa but found the Blue Lagoon too pricey or busy, I suggest visiting Laugarvatn Fontana.
In addition to the spa, they also have an onsite geothermal bakery where bread is slow-baked in the ground for a day, and you can even try a piece yourself!
I mean, a spa day AND freshly baked bread?

Fridheimar Farm (FriĆ°heimar)
All that talk about bread made me hungry, and whatās one of the best bread pairings?

As far as unique spots go, KeriĆ° Crater definitely makes the list!
Itās a beautiful volcanic crater located in the GrĆmsnes area in South Iceland.
The water is clear blue, and if you want to see all the colors of the surroundings really pop, Iād recommend visiting in summer or autumn.
Itās so pretty and a gem that not many people know about!

It must come as no surprise that this scenic area is a hit with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts!
Here are a couple of hikes to try out on the Golden Circle, Iceland.
ĆxarĆ”rfoss: Located under an hour away from the capital, this waterfall can be found in Thingvellir National Park. One of the more popular paths leads from the visitor center, and it is clearly marked. The trail is quite flat and accessible for most people.
Glymur waterfall hike: As Icelandās second-highest waterfall, Glymur is impressive to say the least! This is a great hike to take between June and September, but for safety, I wouldnāt recommend it in winter. This is a great Golden Circle waterfall to add to your itinerary. Angling
Lake Ćingvallavatn (Thingvallavatn) is a popular angling site located on the southwestern side of Iceland.
The northern part of the lake falls within Thingvellir National Park where trout fishing is particularly popular.
Snowmobiling
If youāre a bit of a thrill-seeker, why not hop on a snowmobile and take an hour-long ride on the Langjƶkull glacier?
