When you think of beaches, you probably imagine su When you think of beaches, you probably imagine sunny skies, warm golden sand, and lazy days spent tanning by the water. 🏖️

But beaches in Iceland tell a completely different story.

Think vast, wild, and dramatic coastlines - not beach towels and piña coladas! 😉

If standing on a stretch of black sand with glacier peaks in the distance, incredible rock formations all around, and the roar of the Atlantic Ocean sounds like your kind of beach day…

Be sure to check out these gorgeous black sand beaches while you’re in Iceland 👇🏼

📍Reynisfjara - Iceland’s most famous black sand beach, where striking basalt columns rise out of the ocean, right beside the charming village of Vík.

📍Diamond Beach - Big chunks of ice that break off from Vatnajökull glacier wash up onto the shore and lie scattered on the sand, sparkling in diamonds in sunlight

📍Stokksnes - Picture black sand stretching out in front of you, grassy green hills rolling along the sides, and the iconic Vestrahorn mountain towering in the distance; it’s incredibly beautiful.

📍Djúpalónssandur Beach - A black sand and pebble beach located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. As you walk down to the shore, you’ll see large, heavy lifting stones called Aflraunasteinar that fishermen used to test their strength.

Be sure to SAVE this reel for your upcoming trip to Iceland!

And let me know in the comments…

Would you choose a trip adventuring through Iceland’s beaches over a typical tropical vacay? Because honestly, give me dramatic black sand and glacier views over crowded resort beaches any day! 🖤

Who doesn’t want to see red-hot lava spewing out Who doesn’t want to see red-hot lava spewing out of a giant crater, creating new earth?! 🌋

#oneinalifetimeexperience

Yes, the area is open to see the volcano up close! 👀

But let’s be real, the hike takes most of the day, and the helicopter? Expeeeeensive.

Skip the hike and save yourself 3 hours. Hop in a 4x4 Super Jeep with an English-speaking guide - perfect for anyone who can’t (or doesn’t want to) hike to the eruption site.

🔥Good news: you can get a discount when you book the shuttle bus with @byicelandia. Just use code ICELANDWITHAVIEW when you book.

But hurry, these small group tours sell out fast!

Your drone proves you wrong 🤯

Say hello to Þjófafoss, a hidden gem waterfall in the South Highlands.

A stunning turquoise waterfall surrounded by a lava field and framed with a mountain in the background…

I mean, come on Iceland, now you’re just showing off! 😉

Years ago I first spotted it on Pinterest and had to track it down, even though it wasn’t the easiest to find!

What can I say? I’m stubborn! The drive was a bit of a challenge, but if you’re near the Golden Circle or South Iceland, it’s definitely worth the detour.

Just make sure you have a 4×4 vehicle – the final stretch of road is pretty rough.

And yep, it was better than it looked on Pinterest… especially that view from above 😍

Would you add this stop to your Iceland itinerary?

Planning a quick stopover in Iceland? SWIPE 👉🏼 for tips on how to make the most of it!

Stopping in Iceland on the way to Europe has become popular thanks to the IcelandAir Stopover program, which allows you to add on an Iceland layover at no extra cost.

And I mean, let’s be real - who WOULDN’T want to have 2 vacations for the price of one?! 😍

While ideally, you need 7-14 days to really appreciate what this beautiful country has to offer, a few days, (or heck, just a few hours!) is better than nothing.

But be warned: once you’ve had a taste, you’ll want to come back for more! 😉

2. I’d look up daylight hours for the season so I’d know how much time I actually had to explore

3. I’d check the season before planning anything. Some sites just aren’t accessible year-round, and others (like the Northern Lights) only happen in specific windows.

4. I’d choose a travel pace that matches how I like to explore instead of simply jamming in as much as possible.

5. I’d make sure a digital map handy —  not just for navigating, but to easily find restaurants, restrooms, and gas stations in remote areas!

6. I’d skip the touristy hot springs and head to local pools or lesser-known hot pots.

7. I’d build buffer time into my itinerary for snack breaks, photo opps and even spontaneous detours.

8. I’d pack layers. And then pack more. Even in summer!

9. I’d plan out where to grab food ahead of time, because in some areas, there’s nothing for miles, and you don’t want to find that out when you’re already hungry.

10. I’d get guidance from someone who’s actually an expert—so I don’t waste time, miss key stops, or stress about planning.

I know all of this now, but when I first traveled here, no one was really talking about these things.

I had to dig through endless internet forums, cross-reference outdated blog posts, and learn a lot of lessons the hard way—missed turns, closed roads, and more than one “we should’ve planned this better” moment.

That’s exactly why I created my Iceland Maps + Guidebooks.

So you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did—and so you can avoid the overwhelm and fully ENJOY the trip you’ve been dreaming about!

Comment “MAPS” below and I’ll send you the link to check them out! 👇🏼
