The whole point of traveling to Iceland is to expe The whole point of traveling to Iceland is to experience somewhere that feels DIFFERENT. 🇮🇸And that means letting Iceland be Iceland. The weather won’t always cooperate with your plans, and sometimes seeing the places that make you go WOW requires venturing a little farther off the beaten path.So take the bumpy F-road that leads to that incredible view. Get in the hot spring even when it’s raining. And when winter brings those 4 PM sunsets, remember that all that darkness also means more time to chase the Northern Lights.Appreciate the little moments like these, where Iceland gets to show off all of her wild, rugged beauty.Because one day you’ll be back home, sitting in traffic or surrounded by buildings, and you’ll find yourself missing those roads in the middle of nowhere. You check the aurora forecast, look at the KP inde You check the aurora forecast, look at the KP index section, and see a 3…Welp, guess there won’t be Northern Lights tonight, right?!WRONG. 🙅🏼‍♀️This is one of those things I see trip people up ALL the time.You’re visiting Iceland, seeing the Northern Lights has been on your bucket list forever, and you’ve heard that the KP index is the most important metric.Yes, the KP index is useful for understanding geomagnetic activity, but Iceland lies within the auroral oval. This is an oval-shaped belt around the magnetic poles where you get the best chances of seeing the aurora.Because of this, you don’t necessarily need to wait around for that big, exciting KP 5 or 6 before heading outside.In fact, I’ve watched the Northern Lights from my own apartment balcony with a KP of just 3 or 4!Instead, I’d be more concerned about cloud cover.You could have a super high KP number with tons of aurora activity happening above Iceland…But if there’s a thick layer of clouds between you and the sky, you’re not going to see much of anything.So if you’re visiting Iceland during aurora season (which is typically September to mid-April), don’t write off a viewing if you’ve got a low number on the KP index.Want to give yourself the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights while you’re in Iceland?My full aurora blog covers how to understand the forecast, what conditions to look for, and my favorite viewing spots around Iceland so you know exactly where to go when the skies are looking promising. 🧡Comment “AURORA” and I’ll send it straight to you!#reykjaviklife #icelandplanning #icelandadvice #guidetoiceland #islandia

Waterfall + fall colors + an adventurous hike…and Waterfall + fall colors + an adventurous hike…and it’s only about an hour from Reykjavík?! YES please. 😍Glymur is one of those hikes where getting to the waterfall is half the fun.Because this isn’t one of those places where you pull into a parking lot, walk 5 minutes, snap a photo, and leave.You have to WORK for this one. 😉There’s a river crossing with a log to balance across, rocky sections, plenty of uphill hiking…and then you’re rewarded with jaw-dropping views down into this incredible canyon and Glymur dropping right through it.Most people will want to give themselves around 2.5–3.5 hours for the hike, depending on your pace.And a quick tip: if you’re planning to hike Glymur in the fall, TIMING matters.Early fall can be a great time to do it, but the log used for the river crossing is typically removed sometime around late mid-late October as conditions get colder and more slippery. I recommend this hike from June through September (or early October depending on the weather) and would NOT attempt it in the winter.You’ll also want good hiking boots (waterproof is ideal!), water shoes for the river crossing, plenty of layers, water, and snacks.One last heads up: use the bathroom BEFORE you get there because there aren’t any restroom facilities at the parking lot.Save this one for your fall trip to Iceland! 🍂#reykjaviklife #icelandplanning #icelandadvice #guidetoiceland #islandia
