Thinking of visiting Iceland in January? Here’s what you can (and definitely can’t) do!

✅ The good news?

Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and the Ring Road are all accessible, with well-maintained roads. You can still visit stunning waterfalls, glaciers, and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon without any trouble!

❌ The not-so-good news?

The Highlands – including Þórsmörk and Landmannalaugar – are off-limits during winter. These areas won’t be accessible until summer.

🤔 And the Westfjords?

With heavy snowfall and tough road conditions, this region is best left to expert drivers. Most travelers should skip it in January.

Plan ahead, stay safe, and stick to the destinations that are open – Iceland’s winter landscapes won’t disappoint!

Iceland’s weather can turn an exciting outing into a SERIOUS challenge 😫

Before you head out, think about how the conditions might impact the places you’re visiting.

For example:

🌬️ Black sand beaches: High winds = sand in your face. Pack sunglasses or protective eyewear to shield your eyes.

💧Waterfalls: Freezing temps lead to icy paths. Pack crampons or Yaktrax to avoid falls and stay on your feet.

❄️ Snow-covered paths: Deep snow can soak through shoes fast. Pack waterproof boots to keep your feet nice and dry!

👉 Pro tip: Iceland’s weather changes fast, so pack layers that you can add or remove throughout the day.

Staying warm, dry, and comfortable makes all the difference.

🧊 Ice Cave Adventures: Discover the stunning blue ice caves of Katla, safely guided by experts. Pair it with a visit to the dramatic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach.

🏔️ Glacier Hikes and Frozen Waterfalls: Experience the thrill of hiking on Sólheimajökull and marvel at Iceland’s icy landscapes.
